Reflection: Paul contrasts being drunk with wine and being filled with the Spirit
because both involve influence, but they produce results. Alcohol diminishes self-
control; the Holy Spirit produces it. Being filled with the Spirit does not mean
surrendering to chaos. It means yielding control to the One who can be trusted. That
surrender can feel threatening because you may prefer a life, a faith, and plans God
does not interrupt. You may fear what He will ask you to release, confess, or do. Yet the
greatest danger is not that the Spirit will lead you badly. It is that you will spend years
calling Jesus Lord while maintaining control. Spirit-filled living begins with open hands.
Review the week and name the area you have guarded carefully. Invite the Spirit into
that place. You do not need to understand what He may do. You need trust to offer Him
your willing yes.
Application Question: What are you afraid might happen if you surrendered complete
control of your plans, preferences, or future to the Holy Spirit?
