Reflection: Balaam is a sobering picture of what happens when desire becomes direction. He knew spiritual things. He heard from God. Yet his love of gain distorted him so badly that the donkey could see danger more clearly than the prophet. That is humorous until you realize how serious it is. You can know the right answer and still keep moving the wrong direction because you want something badly enough. Repeated choices create ruts. At first, you steer into the rut. Eventually, the rut starts steering you. That is why your loves matter. What you repeatedly want, protect, and pursue can shape where you go before you realize how far you have traveled. Ask God to show you where your desires are influencing your direction. And remember, changing direction is not only about you. Balaam's choices eventually harmed other people. Your path affects people who walk beside you and behind you.
Application Question: If you keep traveling your current emotional, relational, financial, or spiritual path, where is it likely to lead you and the people closest to you?
