Tuesday: Honor Without Worship

Reflection: Peter gives four commands: honor everyone, love the brotherhood, fear God, and honor the emperor. Notice the order. You are called to treat every person with dignity, but only God receives your ultimate reverence. This protects you from two opposite errors. You do not have to worship leaders, excuse wrongdoing, or give a political movement your full allegiance. You also do not have permission to become mocking, cruel, or disrespectful. Your loyalty to Jesus should make you both courageous and honorable. In a divided culture, that combination is rare. You can speak truth without contempt. You can disagree without demeaning someone made in God’s image. You can resist an ungodly command while still reflecting the character of Christ. Today, think about the language you use when discussing leaders or people with whom you disagree. Your words may reveal whether fear of God or frustration with people is guiding your heart.
